How we chose the best hotels in Mexico:
Every hotel in this list has been selected because we believe it’s a truly wonderful place to stay. When picking the hotels we add to this list, we consider the location, the facilities (so things like spas, restaurants, if there’s a pool and more), the staff and those added finishing touches, like a private terrace for each room, or a bottle of champagne on arrival.
Which area of Mexico is best to stay in?
Truly, it depends what you want from your trip. In the past Mexico has been considered a beach destination thanks to its stretches of white sand sitting alongside perfect pacific blue waves, and if that’s what you’re looking for you won’t go wrong in Cabo San Lucas, where the cool kids head to surf, or Tulum, Riviera Maya or Cancun, where the sand is white and the water is wonderfully warm. For cool, relaxed vibes head to the island of Holbox, which used to be a hidden secret - sadly that ship has sailed, but the relaxed vibes remain.
Nowadays, more and more people flock to Mexico City to explore the museums and experience its seemingly endless restaurants and bars. Oaxaca is also a firm favourite for many travellers; a place where you can visit ancient ruins by day and sip mezcal in a cool underground bar by night.
Whatever your needs, there’s something to suit in our full edit of Mexico hotels.
Four Seasons Mexico City
Located close to multiple tourist hotspots, including the Angel of Independence and the Museo Nacional de Antropología (Anthropology Museum), this property is perfectly located if you want to tick some sightseeing off your list. But that’s not to say it’ll be easy to leave; the grand hotel, with a stunning inner courtyard and huge rooms, is a comfortable and luxurious place to hangout. A highlight is its cocktail bar, Fifty Mils, where you can expect cocktails with flavours such as fermented corn pulque, mezcal infused in avocado leaf and chocolate salt.
Why we love it: A perfect city location and a great cocktail bar. What’s not to love?

Cartesiano, Puebla
Puebla is a beautiful, but still relatively quiet town, making this stay a wonderful option for those that wish to discover the culture of the country without the crowds that can be found in busier cities. Cartesiano is a travel insider favourite, thanks to its chic design, which mixes old and new to create a hotel that’s seriously memorable. It was originally a home for local nuns and, later, an old tile factory, so expect old touches like hand-painted tiles alongside a brand new rooftop pool and a wonderful spa. This Playa del Carmen property is perfect for those who love a vintage vibe - the design relies heavily on thrifted and flea market finds, so you can expect a varied selection of furniture that brings a fun vibe to the place. Mostly, this is a hotel that feels welcoming; helped by the library, garden and rooftop terrace, which are all available for guests to use. There are just nine rooms at this hotel, but the best are those with a terrace, which give a glimpse of the ocean.

We’re no different, and our pick of the best places to stay would be this 12-bedroom boutique property in downtown Oaxaca, where large rooms are decorated with local textiles and furnishings, and the courtyard is full of relaxed travellers sipping coffee or a cocktail. It’s the type of property you imagine when you think of Mexico hotels – stonewashed walls, rattan furniture and a cool outdoor pool. We’re sold.

Paradero Todos Santos, Baja California
It has arguably one of the most photographed pools around the world, and it’s not difficult to see why; the long, infinity pool overlooks acres of farmland and mountains, making for a striking image. The hotel itself is pretty different from the usual offering - think brutalist-style architecture and mid-century furniture - and the location (which feels like the middle of nowhere, but is really a 10-minute drive from Todos Santos town) is unique. This property was designed to help travellers feel more connected to the landscape, and there’s something very special about watching the sun set amongst nature. The cocktails here are also top-class, which helps add to the relaxed vibe.
Why we love it: That poolside view is enough to convince us to book

One&Only Mandarina, Puerto Vallarta
Located within the rainforest overlooking the pacific ocean and on the outskirts of Puerto Vallarta, this property feels almost otherworldly. Designed to feel blended in with the natural environment, it’s nothing like a busy city break; in fact, the main purpose for your time here is to relax, take in nature and experience absolute quiet. It helps, of course, that the hotel itself is a total dream, with free-standing villas and treehouses offering complete privacy, furniture and artwork from local designers and four open air restaurants plus a treetop bar. Be sure to book into the fine dining Carao restaurant, where you’ll enjoy Mexican dishes with a modern twist.

Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Rosewood Mayakoba, Playa del Carmen
Adventure-seekers will love this property, which must be reached by boat and sits among lagoons, the jungle and a beach. Playa del Carmen and Tulum are both within reach, but it feels like a million miles away once you’ve found your suite amongst nature. This is a place where service is truly memorable; you can expect staff to remember little things about you, and even embroider your initials onto pillowcases. There’s also an impressive six restaurants serving food from around the world, so it’s only too easy to spend long stretches of time at this resort.
Why we love it: Everything about this stay feels like an adventure

Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, Cabo San Lucas
This village-inspired property is certainly unique, but with an ideal location (quite literally on the beach) and a rustic beach vibe, it’s immediately welcoming. The design is Mediterranean-inspired, so has a familiarity that you’ll likely appreciate. What’s not familiar, though, is the in-room hot tubs and personal plunge pools that help to make this stay extra special. Depending on the time of year, you might even be able to spot some humpback whales as you look out over the ocean, welcome margarita in-hand.
Why we love it: It feels totally unique, like you’re at the edge of the world (in the best way).
