These are the best UK spas for total rest and relaxation

Name a better feeling than slipping into a soft, white dressing gown, switching your phone to ‘out of office’ and being thoroughly taken care of? Our UK spas are so dreamy, you don't have to travel far to find exactly this kind of escapism.
From cosy country retreats that feel like you've left the world behind, to a beachside haven, or even a secret oasis in the centre of our biggest cities, there's so many spas to choose from. Each offer up something different, whether you're looking for all-organic treatments (hello, Bamford), fine dining to follow your facial (see: Glasgow's Blythswood Square and London's 45 Park Lane), pool cabanas with an ocean view (check out The Nici) or a sauna overlooking the forest (thank you, Galgorm).
We love a solo or group spa sesh, so depending on how your social battery is doing, you can while away a day being preened and pampered by a stranger you don’t have to make small talk with, or you can chill with friends poolside and catch up over a mani and a glass of fizz.
Of course, if you’ve taken a day out of your schedule and splashed out on some dedicated TLC, you'll want to know that you’re in for a relaxing ride, with all the expertise on hand to give you exactly what you need, so we've carefully selected the best UK spas that will offer you the rest and relaxation you crave. *Inhales*. Ahhhhh, relaxation at its finest…

Best for membership and regular spa treats
The vibe: This destination spa is serious about the business of spa’ing and Champneys Tring is the UK's OG spa, with the first health and wellness retreat started on this site way back in 1925. Set in 170 acres of Hertfordshire countryside, and just a 45 minute train ride from central London, it offers peace, space and a host of active and relaxing experiences
You’ll find a mix of hotel residents, day spa guests and regular members all busy creating their version of wellness, whether it’s in the gym, the thermal pools and outdoor jacuzzi, or finding rest and relaxation away from the bustling crowds on the water floatation beds. To make the most of your experience, book in for a PT session or one of the exercise classes (from yoga to HIIT) there’s a full daily schedule. There’s also every type of treatment on offer from different massage therapies to pampering full body treats and aesthetic treatments.
You won’t go hungry, with the Spa Cafe or Restaurant to choose from (alcohol is only served at dinner), there’s plenty of delicious snacks and veggies on offer to help you achieve your 30 a week microbiome target.
If you want to stay over, there’s a full range of accommodation. Book into the Princess Diana suite for a spacious luxe pad overlooking the gardens and easy access to spa and restaurant. And yes she did stay in that very room as a Champneys regular.
Come with: A group of friends, this is a hang out and socialise kind of spa, rather than a romantic getaway or solo escape spot. In the large outdoor jacuzzi we met young and old - a grandson staying with his very chic grandmother for the weekend, old friends catching up while spa’ing and a hen party group all enjoying the spa vibe here.
Hero treatment: Book in for the Champneys Body Radiance, a relaxing and revitalising treatment that corporates a full body exfoliation and massage that will leave you floating.
You’ll leave feeling: Relaxed, pampered, well fed and ready to book in again. For those who fancy a regular Champneys treat at one of their 9 nationwide locations, you may be interested in their new Cloud 9 annual membership that gives members unlimited spa facility access, 4 signature treatments and 20% discount on further treatments, 24 guest passes a year so you can share the love and a host of other members only wellness benefits, from £1777 per year.

Best spa for an incredible setting
The vibe: The five AA Red Star award-winning hotel - a Relais & Châteaux property - is located in beautiful Berkshire (just 40 minutes from London), and is owned by the National Trust and part of the Iconic Luxury Hotels collection. They really don’t come much more quintessentially British than this. The perfect summer / winter set-up, there's a fabulous outdoor pool and hot tub (which guests were enjoying in November) with the most sublime historical surroundings. Inside you'll find a decadent indoor pool and hot tub, an orangerie-style room for relaxing with an eatery, and some of the best treatments we've tried.
Come with: Your other half or your mum, for maximum relaxation.
Hero treatment: The spa heroes OSKIA’s multi-award winning nutritional skincare range (which has been one of our long-standing faves). Drawing on traditional knowledge such as acupressure, specialist massage, reflex and lymph drainage, as well as elements such as gentle enzyme and AHA peeling, the treatments are results-driven but incredibly relaxing. The Oskia Theraface Pro facial is a non-negotiable and uses percussive therapy to reduce tension and relax facial muscles, micro-current technology to firm and tone, along with LED and infrared light for antibacterial and anti-ageing benefits.
You'll leave feeling: Like you've slept for a week.
Best spa for whatever the weather
The Nici, Bournemouth
The vibe: The hotel's interiors feel like Gatsby meets Miami. It's grand, luxe and sumptuous but with a cool, relaxed beach club atmosphere. It makes sense since the hotel's outside pool and cabanas overlook the beach and ocean below. Meanwhile inside, there's an 18m heated pool, a steam room, a sauna, a thermo pool and even a dedicated relaxation room. There you can cocoon yourself in one of the cosy day beds separated by privacy curtains for a quiet moment of rest, meditation and a little snooze if you fancy.
Come with: You can come alone for some tranquil solitude, or with your best girl group for a pamper together.
Hero treatment: Try The Nici X Oto Signature Massage in one of the eight treatment rooms, which infuses CBD into an essential oil blend for ultimate relaxation.
You'll leave feeling: Depending on where you head, you can leave feeling enlivened from the outside pool cabanas, or thoroughly rested and recuperated from the spa.

Best spa with a relaxing walled garden
Ellenborough Park, Glouchestershire
The vibe: Escapism in the heart of the Gloucestershire countryside. The intimate spa, which is set within Ellenborough Park's grand listed building, boasts six treatment rooms (including one for couples), a jacuzzi pool, sauna and steam room. Post treatment you can either cocoon yourself in the cosy indoor relaxation area, or you may choose to draw on the healing power of nature in the Spa Garden Retreat. Located in a walled garden inspired by the Chelsea Flower Show, this newly launched private area is a balm for a weary mind and body. Relax on a sun lounger enveloped in the sweet, herbaceous scents of honeysuckle and other seasonal botanicals from the pergola walkway. Or ease tired muscles, while sipping on champagne, in the year-round covered hot tub. Last, but by no means least, there's also an outdoor swimming pool, which is just as idyllic a spot for lengths as it is for afternoon tea on a summer's day.
Come with: A group of girl friends to enjoy exclusive use of the Spa Garden Retreat for a slice of your stay here.
Hero treatment: Particularly impressive is the Revitalise Facial Ritual, a 55-minute Elemis treatment that comes as part of the The Spa Garden Retreat Package. It's completely tailored to your skin on that particular day, so expect skin to be flooded with moisture if it's experiencing dry patches or a soothing and deep-cleansing protocol if breakouts are an issue.
You'll leave feeling: Like you've got a new spring in your step after 5-star service, top-toe-pampering and relaxing in the great outdoors.
Best spa for the views
Galgorm, 30 mins from Belfast
The vibe: This is the place to go if you want to reconnect with nature from the comfort of a bubbling outdoor jacuzzi. The Galgorm boasts one of the biggest thermal villages in Europe. It's set against a forest with a river running through the centre and plenty of private plunge pools to enjoy in solitude. You can sit in the celtic sauna and enjoy some woodland watching while the sauna master takes you on a mindful journey. There's a snow cabin, a salt cave and plenty of places to kick back and relax, from the Palm House to the Elements timber dome nestled next to the river.
Come with: This is the perfect spot for a couples retreat or some one-on-one time with your bestie.
Hero treatment: The customised facial is edited specifically to your skin and its needs. It favours a clinical, results-driven approach with a powerful blend of antioxidants, enzymes and stem cells so you can get your glow on.
You'll leave feeling: Wholesome, relaxed and reinvigorated.
Best intimate spa
The vibe: 45 Park Lane is one of the chicest hotels in town and its spa is no different (would you expect anything different from the Dorchester Collection?). It's super intimate and not overwhelmingly busy, making it the ideal place for some respite from the city. Want some great gram fodder? This is the spa for you. Designed by Jouin Manku, the spa features a stunning artistic floral mosaic created by Venetian artisans using traditional Roman-style tiles as a backdrop that will garner the Insta likes. There's a sauna, steam room, and hydro pool, state-of-the-art gym and relaxation area with fresh teas and fruits. There is also a Residents Lounge overlooking the pool with a lovely open fireplace, as well as a varied menu of healthy dishes by 45 Park Lane’s executive chef Elliott Grover (if you've tasted his food, you'll know). The treatments are second to none; indulge in a relaxing massage or facial with Valmont and Ishga products.
Come with: Your bestie or your mum - it's the perfect intimate spot for a good catch-up.
Best exclusive use spa
The Cross Bath, Thermae Bath Spa
The vibe: Peaceful, private and truly memorable, The Cross Bath at Thermae Bath Spa provides one of the most special, secluded spa experiences you'll find anywhere across the whole of the UK. Situated in the heart of one of the country's most beautiful cities, it is a real hidden gem bursting with history and natural majestic grandeur in a totally inviting and unintimidating way. An intimate, open-air thermal bath, it can be found just opposite Thermae Bath Spa's more extensive spa facilities and surrounds the Romans' Cross Spring, which is now recognised as an official sacred site. As you relax in the impressive surroundings of the oval Cross Bath, you can watch the natural thermal waters cascade from the spring from a specially commissioned poolside fountain while the dedicated, super accommodating member of staff tops up your drinks.
Come with: A group of up to nine of your best friends to make the most of the exclusive space (the unique venue can be enjoyed by parties of up to ten people).
UK spas and spa breaks UK: spa hotels UK
The vibe: Designed to transcend the stresses of modern life, Gaia Spa is full of spaces where you will find yourself naturally relaxing. Whether it's a dip in either of the swimming pools, a freshen up in one of the sensory showers, a sit down in a sauna or steam room (there are five), a snooze in the relaxation room, or a bite to eat in the Spatisserie (how clever?), you'll feel at peace all day.
Come with: Your partner, your friends, a good book. Anyone and everyone will love this place, and will beg you to bring them again.
Hero treatment: Everything on offer at Gaia is pure magic, but we cannot recommend the Serenity Treatment enough. From the use of the spa's own products - which are all natural and homemade in Britain - to the expert hands of the masseuse (shout out to Libby), this bespoke 90-minute experience is like nothing you've had before. Prepare to fall asleep. It combines all of your favourite treatments in one, so you'll receive a back exfoliation and hot stone back massage to relieve tension, followed by a unique jade facial and scalp massage, and leaves you feeling utterly brand new and refreshed.

Best spa near London
Cottonmill Spa at Sopwell House
The vibe: Just 40 minutes from central London, Sopwell House is a magnificent stately home that houses the newly refurbished Cottonmill Spa. Arranged over three floors, it's got a huge outdoor garden chill-out area with major LA botanical vibes. The spa's clean lines, sumptuous day beds and play swings are arranged around thermal spas, salt steam rooms, organic steams and the largest panoramic sauna with outdoor views. Go for The Club upgrade and gain access to an additional floor where you'll find a room of heated musical light-up beds and a Whispering Gallery for zen-like calm. Spotless changing rooms with Dyson Sonic hairdryers are the kind of extra details we really appreciate.
Come with… A friend who will order the burger. The day spa pass includes a delicious three-course meal at The Pantry, which is definitely not all green juices and salad, so make sure you enjoy.
Hero treatment: All of them are amazing, but we tried the Elemis 60-minute pro collagen anti-aging facial: a face, neck, shoulder and head massage and pummel as well as an incredible mask, peel and drench with oil. It left our skin plumped, dewy and glowing (and our hair needing a definite scrub.)

Best spa for indulgence
The vibe: Mere metres from the River Thames and sandwiched between bustling commuter hotspots Charing Cross, Waterloo and Victoria, you might be surprised to discover the capital's most serene spa. Spread over four floors and covering an enormous 3,300 square metres, ESPA Life at Corinthia is a haven of undisturbed bliss, offering a smorgasbord of revolutionary lifestyle programmes, treatment therapies and grooming experiences that nourish you from the inside out. Subtly sexy in its aesthetic, rich, opulent darkness offers up a new take on bright, modern spas, with strong, curved cocoons and ambient fireplaces rendering the vast space entirely intimate.
Come with: Your partner for a blissfully relaxing, sensual afternoon full of peaceful indulgence. Make a weekend of it and stay in one of the hotel's exquisite bedrooms, decorated in muted green, grey and blue tones, which come complete with just about every hotel luxury you could dream of - from heated bathroom floors to deliciously soft dressing gowns and ESPA bath products.
Hero treatment: All of them, but particularly the Clarifying Facial. Dr. Barbara Sturm has a great reputation for a reason, and this treatment - formulated for blemish-prone skin - is everything. So often facials feel a bit tentative and ineffective, or at least only temporarily effective, but this one packs a real punch. A cleanse, exfoliation, extraction, steam, moisturise and even a little micro-needling, there's no chance you'll leave feeling short-changed.

Best spa for a girls' weekend
The vibe: Downton Abbey at the front, luxe Med escape at the back! The all-seasons hotel has a Mediterranean-feel in the summer (ideal now we can't jet off on an actual holiday), to an indulgent thermal vibe in the winter for cosy spa days when the weather is a bit grim. You'll be seriously impressed by the sheer number of pools and jacuzzis (both indoors and outdoors, and one indoor/outdoor one) on offer. There's also so many thermal cabins of differing temperatures, humidities and aromas to discover, as well as those epic 'rainforest' showers, relaxations rooms and even foot baths so you can spend hours on your spa journey. They've also just added an Ice Igloo, Herbal Steam Room and Salt Inhalation Steam Room, as well as Finnish and Juniper Saunas, with a redecoration of the Members’ Lounge and changing rooms too. All gyms and fitness rooms across the collection have been finessed with the latest equipment and upgraded kit, from Technogym bikes to treadmills and free weights for all those looking to abandon the home workouts and ramp up their fitness training. We've never experienced a spa this high-tech in the UK and our Instagram followers were seriously impressed.
Come with... From the contemporary nail bar to the eight indoor or outdoor pools, this awarding-winning spa (all 45,000 sq.ft. of it!) gives off the vibes perfect for a girls' trip away from the city. Come with your mum, aunty, sister-in-law, cousins.... the more the merrier for the ultimate girls' day out.
Hero treatment: Any of the massages. The therapists seriously know what they're doing here. I opted for the pregnancy massage and it was the best massage I've ever had. I was propped into a seriously comfortable position using a pillow under my bump (a technique I've seen been using for comfort in bed), whilst the therapist gently but effectively worked on my body using relaxing pregnancy oils. The massage was totally tailored to my needs and as a sufferer of some major fluid retention (and cankles, eek!), she gently worked on my legs and ankles to reduce any swelling before finishing off with an incredible depuffing lotion, which gave me back my ankle definition.
You'll leave feeling... Fresh enough to take on any girls' night out if that's what you're up for - or ready to melt into bed if you're 35 weeks pregnant like me.

Best spa for couples
The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel, Suffolk
The vibe: Charmingly set within the grounds of an impressive Georgian property, with many of its original features - think high ceilings and grand staircases - still intact, this place makes you feel like you've arrived at a properly "grown up" spa. It's smart and luxurious, but with a quietly understated elegance that will put any spa novice immediately at ease.
Come with: Your other half - the outdoor rooftop hot tub was made for couples' selfies! Panoramic views of the acres of lawn from the rooftop all add to the idyllic, zen-like energy of the place.
Hero treatment: The ESPA Modern Alchemy Ritual Treatments. Choose from two options – the Harmonising Ritual or the Empowering Ritual – which fuse together ancient rituals and traditional ingredients, including herbs and flowers from the Hotel's gardens, with modern wellness. Both treatments incorporate jade rollers, foot bathing, crystals (including moonstones) and ancient yantra cards to help you set your intentions. The Harmonising Ritual is the more relaxing of the two, during which you enjoy a stress-melting massage performed with a Kansa Wand, a tool traditionally used to calm the nervous system and encourage energy flow through the body. The Empowering Ritual focuses on the body's chakras and uses energising strokes during the full-body massage both manually and with a green Jade roller, ensuring body, mind and spirit are realigned.
You'll leave feeling: Like you're on cloud 9. Like the weight of the world has literally been lifted off your shoulders. And also asking yourself why you don’t do this sort of thing more often!?

Best spa for swimming
Spa at the South Lodge, Surrey
The vibe:
An oasis of calm. Driven from the hotel to the spa by a tuk tuk, you feel as if you are entering a world away. Expect unrivalled panoramic views from the moment you step out onto the spa’s beautifully crafted terrace, with an outdoor vitality hydrotherapy pool that overlooks the rolling hills of the South Downs. If you thought one pool was spectacular, prepare yourself for the second, an indoor infinity, and if you’re feeling adventurous, dip a toe or two into the third, the UK’s first heated natural swim pond. From a steam room to sauna, the Spa at South Lodge has it all, with glass walls surrounding the spa to blend outdoors with indoors, giving you that perfect zen feeling.Come with:

These glowing pods combine vibration, light, sound and scent for the ultimate state of relaxation. You'll leave feeling:
Completely and utterly rejuvenated. Warning: you’ll find it hard to tear yourself away.Best affordable spa
The vibe: Seated in the heart of the Woburn forest overlooking a picturesque lake, the spa has the same atmosphere that one might expect from a health retreat in a North American or Scandinavian national park (and it’s only an hour out of London). The spa is expansive and tranquil and forms part of a greater centre in which you can also enjoy outdoor activities like cycling or canoeing. But perhaps what really sets this spa apart is its individually-themed treatment areas, which include Fire and Ice, Mineral and Gemstone, Herbal, Sensory, Blossom, and Salt – each offering their own unique take on the sauna, steam room and shower experience.
Come with... Your girlfriends or your partner. You don’t need to be a guest at the park to enjoy a spa day or a couple of treatments so it’s ideal for a bridal shower or even a date – with each of the spa zones offering something new and exciting to discover. You can also splash about in the outdoor infinity pool or take part in various talks and activities such as a Scandinavian sauna ritual.
Hero treatment: The Decléor City Detox Face and Body Ritual includes a deep tissue massage perfectly designed to detoxify your body and skin from the pollution and stress of city life. For your Mister, try the Elemis Men’s Couture Touch treatment, which is a newly launched facial and massage combo (bonus: he leaves smelling fantastic for the rest of the evening).
You’ll leave feeling… Detoxed and wondering why you didn’t do it sooner.

Best spa for exclusivity
The Lanesborough Club & Spa, London
The vibe: Oozing complete and utter luxury, little else will compare after spending the day in the most grand spa you’ll find yet. You’ll even have your own spa butler. Tip: try not to spend too much time in the relaxation room otherwise you really will never want to leave.
Come with... Just yourself, no distractions, for that ultimate relaxation time with me, myself and I.
Hero treatment: La Prairie Caviar Lifting and Firming Facial. Unsure at the thought of someone putting caviar all over your face? Think again. Known as one of the most sought after skincare brands, La Prairie’s Caviar Luxe Cream can turn even the dullest complexions into pure glowing radiance. Plus, it's rich in Omega 3 so it really is doing your skin wonders. This facial will be one you’ll never forget.
You'll leave feeling: Utterly replenished and pampered, like you’ve been world away from the noisy streets of London.
Meadow Spa,Thyme
The vibe: Thyme for me is a level above any UK spa hotel I’ve stayed in so far. They describe themselves as a “village within a village” and nestled within that is the Meadow Spa, an oasis of calm yet cosy.
Come with… Extra cash. If you’re a dedicated Aurelia fan you’ll know they are the only spa to offer Aurelia treatments (I swear by their CBD Super Serum + Probiotics) and wow, do they deliver.
Hero treatment: Perhaps the most heavenly treatment I’ve experienced is the Aurelia Ritual for Skin Body and Mind (£145 60mins) a carefully considered choreography of calm, with just the right amount of pressure whilst also allowing your body (and mind!) to completely relax. Not forgetting the gorgeous outdoor pool, which when the weather is on your side - can make you feel like you’re in a rustic Majorcan villa.
You'll leave feeling: Like you can't wait to return. It's well worth a visit and in my opinion parting with a bit more of your bank balance than your average spa hotel!

Bamford Spa, Daylesford
The vibe: Stepping into Bamford Spa is like stepping into a very bouji future, everything is white, bright and just below clinical, all of this is softened with country chic finish in every room (particularly the treatment rooms).
Come with… high expectations. Every treatment I’ve had here has been out of this world, thorough and personalised to my preferences. Prices are around the £100 mark for a treatment where they use their signature Bamford products, the beds are heated and if you’re anything like me you’ll melt away like a melting cheesy burrito in them.
Hero Treatment: They’ve expanded their spa area which it’s now equipped with a gorgeously quaint and cute Orchard Bar area, offering nutritional organic food and refreshments (be warned their organic ethos means you can’t get your diet coke fix!) but all is forgiven once you’ve experienced their treatments drools.
You'll leave feeling: Incredible.

Best new spa in the north of England
The vibe
Scandi wooden chalets surrounding lots of peaceful water (including a freshwater swimming lake) means this newly opened - and impeccably eco-friendly - spa blends seamlessly into its beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds surroundings. The spa is adjacent to the Laceby Manor Golf club, but is artfully designed so that guests are not visible from the putting greens or bunkers. Built to the highest of standards (think Tom Dixon appliances in the bathrooms) the spa boasts two saunas - one with fresh herbs from the grounds infused in the cauldron every morning - a vast and heavenly scented aromatherapy steam room, hammam, rasul and an indoor to outdoor heated pool overlooking the freshwater swimming lake. Voya, 111Skin and Tribe 517 products are used throughout the spa. For accommodation each cosy cabin has its own outdoor bath on a private decked terrace. The restaurant serves locally sourced food and the chef was very accommodating of food allergies. (Although bear in mind that the restaurant closes at 4pm Monday - Wednesday, so if you are staying over on those days, it’s worth exploring local restaurants or takeaway.) A special mention must go to the variety of Arte wallpaper throughout the spa! All artfully selected by Alex, the spa manager and on stunning display in the Closettes - solo decompressing booths to come around in, post-treatment, with a fresh pot of herbal tea.
Come with your swimming cossie to embrace the joys of endorphin-boosting (and oh so on trend) freshwater cold swimming. For 2023, Laceby Manor will be hosting Wim Hof cold water therapy classes that focus on breathing and are known to reduce anxiety and boost mental health.
Hero treatment. While I experienced the signature VOYA Organic Face and Body Ritual - 90minutes of sheer and utter bliss - I was also lucky enough to sample one of the VOYA seaweed baths. Laceby Manor is one of the pioneers of seaweed bathing, and has a specially designed bathing room to enjoy the detoxifying, healing and circulatory boosting benefits of fresh seaweed. Your skin will never have been softer.
You’ll leave feeling: peaceful, calm and if you’re brave enough for a freshwater dip - utterly euphoric!
