91% of GLAMOUR readers think deepfakes are a danger to women, so we went to Parliament to find out how they can be stopped

Last year, GLAMOUR partnered with Refuge and Rape Crisis England & Wales to release a consent survey exploring women's attitudes towards consent – in real life and online. Of all the findings – which you can read in full here – we were seriously concerned to discover that 91% of GLAMOUR readers think deepfake technology poses a threat to the safety of women.
Deepfakes are a form of media that are digitally manipulated to replace one person’s likeness convincingly with that of another. And troublingly, a report into deepfakes in 2023 shows that deepfake pornography constitutes 98% of all deepfake videos found online. And that 99% of those targeted by deepfake pornography are women. No wonder we're scared.
And it's not just about deepfake porn, either. Home Secretary James Cleverley has warned that the UK's upcoming general election could be hijacked by deepfake videos sharing fake news. He told The Times, “The era of deepfake and AI-generated content to mislead and disrupt is already in play.”
So, what can be done about deepfakes? We headed to Parliament to find out.
Meet our expert panel:
We were delighted to welcome a whole host of experts to advise on deepfaking technology, including Clare McGlynn, Professor of Law at Durham University and leading expert on women’s online safety; Laura Kankaala, Threat Intelligence Lead at F-Secure; Jessica Smith, Principal Online Safety, Violence Against Women & Girls Lead at Ofcom; Olivia DeRamus, Founder of Communia; Tsitsi Matekaire, Equality Now's Global Head of Ending Sexual Exploitation; Sharon Gaffka, an activist and podcaster; Rosie Johnston-Luff, Government Affairs and Public Policy at Google UK, and many many more.
Stay tuned for more information from our parliamentary roundtable on deepfaking.
