Want to know which spring 2024 hair trends you need on your radar? We've tapped up the top hair stylists for their expert predictions.
The good news is, there are no rules – because experimentation is in. “I think we will see more and more creative ways that hair is incorporated into a look,” says celebrity hair stylist, Jay Birmingham, whose clients include Sofia Richie. And bold cuts are on the menu. “I would love to see more daring, short cuts in contrast to the usual super glam Hollywood waves. Iris Law does this so well,” Jay adds.
This year, accessories will feature more heavily than before. The hair bow has been building a fan base for some time, but it will continue to be a cute addition throughout the season. Meanwhile, headbands are here to keep fringes back and off your face as the weather gets warmer. “I anticipate that accessories will become bigger, more vibrant and more fun as a continued way of self expression through hair,” reckons celebrity hair stylist, Andrew Fitzsimons, who counts the Kardashians as clients.
Some familiar trends remain (looking at you, layers), the bob is going nowhere and one hairstyle in particular has everyone's attention.
Here's the spring hair trends set to hog the spotlight this year…
Hair bows
Before we even begin with cuts, we have to address the accessory in the room. Hair bows are big, both in size and in influence. If you didn't already jump on the trend as it took off in 2023, no worries – spring is your moment. The pretty addition can level-up an ordinary outfit with a little extra interest. We love them wrapped around ponytails, braids, buns and half updos. Expect to see them in all different fabrics (organza, silk, satin) and all different shades.

Frame layers
One trend that's only going to increase its impact through spring (and beyond) are layers, with an emphasis on face-framing. Hence: frame layers. “So many of the trending cut shapes right now incorporate some ‘Rachel-esque’ face framing and feathered layers," confirms top hair stylist and trend forecaster, Tom Smith. Consider them a spring clean for hair. They can help prune back un-needed weight for a fresh update, even if you don't want to change your style radically. “Adding layers and texture to any length cut will help to maintain a shape for longer,” explains pro hair stylist and Aveda educator, Leah Hill. “A lot of the time people get scared of adding layers in case it takes away from the length but it won’t. From long to short, layers will help add personality and shape. Take the butterfly cut for example, it’s a great way to elevate a longer cut but can also work on shorter and mid length and takes minimal maintenance,” she adds.
"Hair that’s not tailored can swamp your features. I would always encourage face framing tendrils and soft movement to open the facial features. It adds volume, body and interest to hair,” agrees celebrity hairstylist and ColorWow international creative director, Dom Seeley. “If you don’t want to add layers through the internal sections of your hair, then layering the perimeter (face framing) will add dimension, which makes for easier cool-girl styling,” Dom adds.

And we have all the inspo…

'70s texture
We've seen more and more people embracing their coils and curls, but for spring expect to see a lot more exaggeration and playfulness with teased, airy textures. “For waves and curls '70s texture will add movement without it being too uniformed,” says Leah. Add products like Aveda’s Nutriplenish Curl Gelee to elongate curls. And for extra airiness coax hair out with a boar bristle brush.

Ponytail braids
Plaits and braids are not new, but we've noticed that there's one rendition in particular that's everywhere right now. High and mid-height braided ponytails have been signed off as the hairstyle of the season by the fashion set to add a more casual but elevated twist to outfits. Even Zendaya gave it her seal of approval with a butt-length version that she topped with a bow on the red carpet. It's cute, it's stylish and it's perfect as we head toward warmer weather.

The Old Money bob
We can thank TikTok for spring's trending bob cut. The ‘Old Money aesthetic’ has collided with everyone's favourite just-above-the-shoulder chop to give us the Old Money bob. The style takes things back to basics and to the original classic shape, however extra attention is paid to the condition (extra glossy) the shape (immaculately blunt) and the oomph (way more bounce). “It's more heavy and chunky and rounded with volume," says Dom. “It's extra voluminous and polished but with body and movement. The sweet spot for this type of bob is to cut it somewhere between the chin and collarbone, but without layers,” he adds.
“The old money bob is a great cut for all hair types wanting to cut it all off," says Leah. "Keep a strong base line and thickness just below the jaw, then add a slight face frame to give soft movement at the front," says Leah. "It's a great cut for coily and curly hair if you're transitioning from growing out a chemical treatment and want to gradually start going for a natural silk press,” Leah adds.

Side partings
One of the easiest ways to hit on one of spring's biggest trends is to simply flip out your parting. “Side swept and asymmetric hairstyles have been seen again and again,” confirms Tom. “The relaxed elegance of hair swept over one shoulder is extremely feminine, whilst looking undone and soft. This spring we'll see a firm push towards deep side partings, for short cuts, bobs, longer styles and even fringes too,” he adds. This is another look that has a luxe, old money feel, says Leah, so “use products to give the hair high shine. This gives an expensive, chic feel.”

Modern midi
The midi offers the best of both worlds: it's short enough to feel fresh and styled, but long enough to give versatility. And turns out, it's pretty darn stylish, too. The midi has seen a comeback in recent years since it works well against the shag, the wolf cut and even the ‘90s Rachel, but “for spring the cut is becoming more refined and polished – it’s a more sophisticated cut that’s less layered, but still has some layering” says Dom, who adds that the modern midi is “cool, effortless and more versatile due to the softness in the internal layers.”
“For a midi cut, you can take it more '90s with the lob,” agrees Leah. “Adding layers and keeping a strong base line will help to make the hair appear thicker and more voluminous. Style it with longer face framing rather than a fringe,” she says. “And use thickening foams like Aveda’s Invati Advanced Thickening Foam to give a medium hold and still allow the hair to move with its natural movement.” Or, “if your hair is textured and you want to achieve the same look, use products such as Aveda’s Smooth Infusion Style Prep Smoother and Smooth Infusion Perfectly Sleek Smoothing Cream to give the hair shine and bounce,” recommends Leah.

Halo hair
Want dreamy hair to rival an angel's? You need the halo haircut. “A halo silhouette describes the shape of your haircut (whether it’s the shape that frames your face or the actual outer silhouette of the haircut). Rounded ‘halo’-like silhouettes are going huge,” says Tom. The halo haircut features “a rounded shape but can have layers and a fringe so it’s perfect for if you wear your hair natural,” agrees Dom. “This cut can be embraced by all hair types to varying degrees and will hero natural curls and textured hair the most. Straighter hair types can also embrace this trend by working with curved bangs, rounded face framing, and gentle mid-length layers,” Tom adds.
For curly girls, it's all about embracing the shape, fullness and texture in its entirety," says Louis Driver, senior stylist at Bleach London. “Have a shape and dry cut (if you wear your hair natural and always curly) as this can breathe life into coils and curls and give it style. You want balance and fullness, as curly or coily hair can fall into a triangular shape,” says Dom. “You want to round off the shape, giving height and volume while maintaining length,” he adds. Or for a bolder silhouette, Leah recommends “taking the cut slightly shorter at the back and more exaggerated to the sides. Aim for a sweetheart shape and embrace your curls and coils by going for a strong shape.”

Headbands
If you thought we'd left the headband back in the ‘80s, you’d be wrong. We've seen the accessory worn recently by the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Laura Harrier, Bella Hadid and Sydney Sweeney. It's across our FYP and the heads of cool girls across social and the streets. The benefit? It adds some style finesse, keeps hair off our face and (bonus) it works like a charm for covering greasy hair days, too.

Short chops
In the mood to lop the lot off as the days get warmer? “Shorter hairstyles have made a huge revival. I’ve already seen pixies making a massive comeback. Taylor Hill is currently wearing a version of it that's so modern, fresh, and feminine,” says Dom. “We've seen pixies becoming more soft, feminine and rounded with curls and texture rather than razored and androgynous. It’s well-cut around the perimeter but has weight, softness, and length throughout to really allow you to wear and play around with so many styles,” he adds.
“You can wear it however you want. I personally love a slicked-back textured pixie,” says Andrew. “I’m loving super short and tapered hair with a disconnected length on top to really allow curls and coils to flourish,” says Leah. ”Ask for a scissor cut to allow for shrinkage," she adds.

Fringes
Last but not least, a fringe is the easiest way to update your look and there are two versions that our experts have pinpointed for spring. “The Birkin fringe is the ultimate cool girl update, this really is the most copied hair ever,” says Adam Reed, pro hairstylist and editorial ambassador for L’Oreal Professionnel. “Nonchalant and undone, it's heavy with a soft feathered edge,” he adds. Meanwhile, Andrew is on team baby bangs, which see the length lopped off above brows. “I definitely think we will see the return of baby bangs this season. Curtain bangs made a comeback recently, and I believe we will see that trend continue on to shorter baby bangs,” he says. You heard it here first.
